When Marathon was first released, I was working in a bullpen type graphic design department; basically 5 or 6 guys who did boring photo-edit work. Before the infamous Marathon Demo, we played network Links golf....and that we thought was exciting!
Marathon changed all that. With "Mars Needs Women" as the only level to network, we learned every inch of that bad boy. At some point I got hold of a hack that let you extend game play (the demo stopped after 10 minutes). So we got great revelry playing "Mars..." for a half hour, with our ghostly corpses piled up in the hallways (mostly in the Coffin).
As time went by, we got skilled at map making, so our own creations became the favorites to play, Somehow, the slang we used for playing Marathon was "running", after the tendecy for us to mash down our caps-locks to have perma-running state in a frenzied net game. So int he hallways at work, a commoin thing to hear was "damn I'm bored, let Run!" Marathon sessions, drunken after the company Christmas party were particularly rowdy.
The novelty and fun of it died after a while (particularly from a p.o'd boss), but those were some fun times. *sniff*
